I sometimes think the NHS has thought of itself as a classic manufacturing process, or at least some people have used that model to try and understand and operate it.
Many years ago, I was on a bus and overheard a conversation between a small child and his mother. “I love you mummy” he said, “do you darling, how much?” she asked, “a thousand pounds” he replied and after a moment of reflection added “and eighteen pence”.
Is it just me, or is the conversation changing in the NHS? I had a fairly typical list of engagements the other day, it went something like this.
