Carpentry and Joinery – Level 2 (with Edward Jenner) Apprenticeship

The construction industry is central to creating the premises which support our healthcare sector and infrastructure. Carpenters and joiners’ occupation is working with wood-based materials and associated products to create and install building components. The role is needed to transition to modern methods of construction and sustainability. 

This apprenticeship combines the NHS Leadership Academy’s Edward Jenner programme with a level two carpentry and joinery apprenticeship. 


Who is it for?

This occupation includes two different options and people will either work on a construction site as a site carpenter or in a workshop as an architectural joiner.

Duration

24 months.

How you will learn

College attendance one day a week. 

What’s covered

You will develop skills in identifying and confirming carpentry or joinery requirements, components, and specifications from drawings, CAD, and BIM, in line with building regulations. You will also learn to locate, handle, store, load, transport, and position materials safely, minimising damage and preparing them for application. Additionally, you will prepare the site or workshop, including access equipment, power, and hand tools specific to the project; calculate the most efficient quantity, length, and area of resources; use and maintain hand and power tools for optimum performance and maintain a clear workspace while disposing of waste in accordance with legislation.

Quality control skills are highly emphasised, including conducting quality checks against specifications and taking remedial actions as needed.

Site carpentry duties include installing building components such as door and window frames, linings, floor joists, coverings, straight partitions, and staircases; installing doors, mouldings, ironmongery, service encasements, wall and floor units, cladding, and staircase components; and erecting inclined roofs with gables, joists, coverings, and roof components.

Entry requirements

English and maths qualifications form a mandatory part of all apprenticeships and must be completed before an apprentice can pass through gateway.
